Genre Research: Sports

What does the Sports Genre Portray?

·       Sports Films are those that have a sports setting (football or baseball stadium, arena, or the Olympics, etc.), competitive event (the 'big game,' 'fight,' or 'competition'), and/or athlete (boxer, racer, surfer, etc.) that are central and predominant in the story.

      Some of these films include:

Remember the Titans

Hustle

King Richard

Common CAMS in Sports Films

For sports film, a wide variety of angles, movements, and shots can be utilized to help make this type of film. Some of the most common shots include the long shot, wide shot, close-up, or point of view. These shots can be used to form the background or capture an entire team, display the emotion on a character's face, or even show what the athlete sees. Similar to shots, high angle, low angle, eye level angle, and tracking movements are also incorporated helping the flow of the film

Mis-En-Scene of Sports Films

Costume- Most costumes in sports films are generally centered on athletic apparel like jerseys, coach's uniforms, and other clothes.

Lighting- Lighting will usually reflect the field or area in which an athlete would play on. For basketball players, it is a gym while for  football players it would be outside with stadium lights.

Acting- Acting in this genre will usually be portrayed based on real-life events allowing for the actors to have a lot of base material to work with and expand on

Makeup- Makeup for this genre isn't a heavy focus but it could be used for certain events

Props- Props for this genre could include balls, sports equipment, boards, playbooks, etc.

Set- Sets for this genre could take place in locations like an arena, gym, boxing ring, field, track, etc.

Editing and Sound Used

Most editing used in sports films relies on cross-cutting, jump cuts, montages, and dissolves. The material used in these types of films does not require heavy editing but uses some in moments to help speed up the time, show progress within a character, and more.

Sound in this genre will combine diegetic and non-diegetic sound together to help build suspense and add to other elements. Music will be used in conjunction with diegetic sound to help bring life to the scene that simple diegetic sound would not.

Elements of the Genre

·           An element of this genre that entices me is the authenticity that comes with most films. Most of them portray a true story or at least some variation of that story so it becomes another point of interest regarding this genre.

·           An element that I do not like is the need for some lesson to be taught at the end of the movie. Most films in this genre will put a large emphasis on the climax of the movie just for the protagonist’s team to lose. In doing this they try to portray a message or within the movie instead of just letting the team succeed
